The San Fernando Valley has a lot to offer. Amazing food, rich history, tons of community events, and amazing people and organizations. I’m Scott Himelstein, with the Scott Himelstein Group, and this is Eat Live Love, San Fernando Valley.
Christian, thanks for having us.
Of course.
All right. So, we’re here at Mojitos, Cuban food, in San Fernando. Tell me about this place.
Well, we’re a restaurant that started in the year of 2020, during the pandemic. Also, we’re a family-based restaurant. We chose San Fernando just for the environment, the city, it’s nice, clean. In addition, it’s we wanted to bring something different to the community, as well. We wanted to bring that Cuban aspect to San Fernando to improve the community.
The ropa vieja is probably one of my favorite dishes that you guys offer. So, tell me a little bit about that dish, and what are some of the other popular dishes that your patrons like to order?
It’s going to be cooked in a tomato-based puree with bell peppers, onions, and also two types of red wine. And, once you bring that all together, you get a nice home cooked meal. Also with that, our proper dishes, our shredded pork in a citrus garlic marinade, as well as our pollo asado, which is going to be a cord-like chicken in a citrus garlic marinade, as well. Amazing flavor to it. Plus, another one of our dishes that I do recommend, and a lot of people try out, just because it sounds strange and weird, definitely has to be the oxtail, just because not a lot of people are familiar with it. A lot of people are afraid to try it. But, once you try it, you will fall in love with it.
And, you’re going to have me try the vaca frita today.
Vaca frita. Yeah. That’s honestly one of my favorite dishes here at Mojitos, and that’s going to be shredded beef, right on the grill, with bell peppers, onions, cooked [inaudible 00:01:50], which is a canola garlic oil based sauce, and also lime juice gives amazing flavors to it. And, that dish also does come accompany with rice, beans and plantains, like traditionally.
Well, it all sounds so delicious. Let’s go back in the kitchen, and see how you do it all.
So, today, I’m trying the vaca frita. This is a classic Cuban recipe. It’s made with flank steak, which is boiled, then it’s shredded, then they proceed to marinate it with garlic and citrus, and it’s pan fried to perfection. So, I can’t wait to dive in and try it.
This meat is incredible. So, this shredded beef, the flank steak, has so much flavor in it. It literally just feels like it’s melting in your mouth. And then, you have some of the green peppers. You can definitely taste the garlic flavor on it. Overall, this is an incredibly flavorful dish that you and your family will be sure to enjoy.. Of course, can’t have a Cuban dish without rice and beans and the plantains. And, have to wash it down with Jupina, a pineapple soda.
So, guys, if you’re looking for a Cuban restaurant, in the San Fernando Valley, highly recommend Mojito. Mojitos, again, located in San Fernando, down North MacLay, during the Library Plaza. Again, on the north side of the street. If you like this episode, well by now, you know what to do. Make sure you like, comment, most importantly, share. And, we look forward to seeing you next time on Eat Live Love, San Fernando Valley.
