Where can you find some great comfort food that’s also vegan? Today on Eat Live, Love San Fernando Valley we got a special treat for you. Today, we’re at Veggietize Me in Panorama City. Let’s get to it.

The San Fernando Valley has a lot to offer. Amazing food, rich history, tons of community events, and amazing people and organizations. I’m Scott Himelstein with the Scott Himelstein Group and this is Eat Live Love San Fernando Valley.

Hey, great to be here.

Great to have you here, Scott.

All right, tell me about this place, because it’s a very inspirational story of how you guys decided as a family to open the Veggietize Me.

So my father owns this business. So how we started was, my auntie was the first vegan in the family and she unfortunately passed some years back in a car accident, so this was basically to honor her and that journey she started and to eventually own a restaurant, but it’s one of those things where you realize your cause correlates to something bigger. So not only are we doing it to honor my auntie, but we’re also doing it to liberate the animals from the slaughterhouse. It’s just one of those things where it’s a beautiful movement to be a part of.

When I think of vegan restaurants, I always think of vegan restaurants in a cafe setting or something that’s extremely uber healthy. I don’t think I’ve ever come across really that many vegan restaurants, especially that are in a storefront, that are comfort food.

Yeah. No, that’s definitely one of our goals here. We definitely wanted to basically just be your vegan junk food spot, ’cause a lot of vegans out there are doing different diets. We want to come and get something to everybody.

Of course, you got your fantastic lunch, dinner items. So what are some of the most popular plates your clients like to order?

So we have all types of different items. The most popular, I would have to say, would either be the bagel or the muffin. Those are both paired with hash browns. We also have a Cuban sandwich that’s breakfast-style with egg.

Not only do you guys have, essentially, vegan burgers, but you got vegan fries.

Yeah, we have vegan fries, man, so check it out. So we have regular Veg-N-Out fries, which comes with just cheese and grilled onions and the sauce. Now the sauce is housemate, kind of assembled into an In-N-Out style sauce, but we put a lot more love into it and it’s not mass produced, so there’s extra, extra flavor in there, you know?

Well, I can’t wait to try that. But what I am going try also is the Monte Cristo. So how do you guys make your vegan Monte Cristo here?

So check it out. So we got the French toast outside, okay. Then we have the OmniPork, the egg, the cheese. We put some granulated sugar, some cinnamon on top, and I sprinkle it like that.

Sounds great. Well, I haven’t eaten breakfast already, so I can’t wait to try it. Let’s go back in the kitchen and see how you do it.

So before I try what I have in front of me here, I want to say, one of the things that I’m really impressed with is the fact that these guys made a concerted effort to open this brick and mortar restaurant, this storefront here in Panorama City, so they could expose the Hispanic community to vegan food. Now, growing up, vegan food, it was always very bland. It just tasted horrible. And these guys with their menu and their food options here, you would almost not really know that this food is vegan. So let’s dive into it.

First I got the Monte Cristo, right? So I got the vegan cheese, the ham cutlets, vegan obviously, of course, the scrambled egg, and on this powdered-sugared French Texas toast, oversized toast. So I’ll put a little bit of syrup on it, add some even more flavor, and then I’ll take a little bit of the butter, put that on there too, spread that around. Let’s dive right in.

So the first thing that you notice is the oversized french toast here. And then immediately you got the savoryness of the vegan cutlet ham, and then scrambled egg and the cheese. This is a fantastic sandwich. Now moving on to the vegan loaded fries. So let’s see if we can get a little bit of everything here in one bite. Get some jalapenos. Take a bite. Solid. Just love the meat mixed with the thousand island dressing, the french fries, everything, and of course the jalapeno. Well after eating the loaded fries, you got to try and I’m going to, the Oreo milkshake. Delicious.

All right guys, if you’re looking for something different to try, a great vegan option, comfort food, breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you got to come out and try Veggietize Me. They’re in Panorama City, they’re on the north side of the street on Parthenia, just west of Van Nuys Boulevard. Come out, check these guys out. Come support them. You’re really going to like them. These guys are heavily involved in the community. Make sure you like, comment, share this episode if you enjoyed it, and we look forward to seeing you next time on Eat Live Love San Fernando Valley.
