Are you craving authentic and mouth-watering Thai food in the San Fernando Valley? Look no further! In this week’s episode of Eat Live Love San Fernando Valley, we take you on a flavorful journey to Lum Ka Naad, a local favorite with locations in Northridge, Encino, and now their newest spot in Woodland Hills.

Lum Ka Naad is more than just another Thai restaurant—it’s a celebration of authentic regional flavors, offering a rare opportunity to experience both Northern and Southern Thai cuisines under one roof. During my visit, I had the chance to chat with Alex, one of the masterminds behind the restaurant’s success, and, of course, indulge in some incredible dishes.

The Meaning Behind Lum Ka Naad

If you’ve ever wondered about the name “Lum Ka Naad,” it’s actually a Northern Thai dialect phrase meaning “very delicious,” and it’s certainly fitting. While many Thai restaurants in Southern California tend to focus on one specific region of the country, Lum Ka Naad offers both Northern and Southern Thai cuisines, making it a true gem for adventurous food lovers.

But what’s the difference between the two? Alex explained that Northern Thai food tends to be lighter, with very little seafood because of the mountainous geography of the region. The Northern dishes also shy away from coconut-based ingredients, unlike Southern Thai dishes, which heavily feature seafood and coconut milk due to the coastal landscape. The Northern cuisine leans on proteins like chicken, beef, and pork, and typically packs less of a spicy punch compared to the South.

What Should You Order?

With over 150 items on their menu, Lum Ka Naad offers an overwhelming number of options. If it’s your first time visiting, Alex recommends going on a culinary adventure by sampling dishes from both regions. However, be warned—the Southern dishes tend to be much spicier.

For my visit, I was excited to try one of their signature dishes: the Spicy Crispy Catfish (Pla Duk Pad Ped). Catfish might be familiar to those who’ve tried it Southern-style, often fried with a distinct fresh water taste, but Lum Ka Naad’s Thai version was a whole new experience.

Alex walked me through the preparation, which starts with cutting the catfish into pieces and frying them until crispy. Then, the fish is cooked with two types of curry paste—Southern curry paste and red curry paste from Central Thailand—before being topped with rhizome, a relative of ginger, and young peppercorn. This combination of spices completely transformed the catfish, giving it a complex and vibrant flavor without any of the fishy odor you might expect from freshwater fish.

A Taste of Thailand in Every Bite

I have to say, the Spicy Crispy Catfish was nothing short of incredible. The deep-fried, crispy texture was perfect, and the blend of curries and spices created an explosion of flavor in every bite. If you’re a fan of spice, this dish is definitely for you. The Southern curry adds a delicious heat that lingers on your palate without overwhelming the rest of the dish.

One of the things I love most about Lum Ka Naad is their commitment to authentic flavors. The balance of spices, textures, and ingredients is carefully crafted to transport you straight to Thailand with every dish. Whether you’re indulging in Northern Thai comfort food or exploring the bold, spicy flavors of the South, there’s something for everyone on the menu.
