Celebrating 100 Episodes of Eat Live Love San Fernando Valley with Western Bagel!

Today marks a milestone for Eat Live Love San Fernando Valley—our 100th episode! To celebrate, we’re bringing you the incredible story of Western Bagel, the family-owned business credited with introducing bagels to California back in 1947.

Western Bagel‘s roots trace back to Jeff’s grandfather, a union baker from New York. Spotting a unique opportunity, he packed up his dreams and recipes and moved west to open California’s very first bagel shop on Pico and Grand in downtown Los Angeles. Eleven years later, the business relocated to Van Nuys, a strategic decision made due to its proximity to freeways and the burgeoning suburban sprawl of the San Fernando Valley.

What makes a Western Bagel unique? According to Jeff, it’s the light, airy texture—a departure from the denser New York style. Incredibly, their recipe remains unchanged since 1947, preserving the authenticity and taste that started it all.

Behind the Scenes

Our tour took us straight to the heart of Western Bagel’s operation. The factory hums with activity, producing a staggering 5,000 dozen bagels per hour to supply their 11 retail stores and countless delis and restaurants. From the initial mix of ingredients to the proof box “sauna,” blast freezer, and final baking in state-of-the-art ovens, the bagels undergo a meticulous process that ensures consistent quality.

Jeff shared how their flavors have evolved over the decades. In the early days, options were limited to plain (water bagels), salt, and egg varieties. Today, the lineup has expanded to include 20 flavors, with classics like Everything, Onion, and Cinnamon Raisin, alongside bold favorites like Jalapeño Cheese.

More Than Bagels

Western Bagel has grown beyond bagels, offering a range of sandwiches and other items. I couldn’t resist trying their hot turkey sandwich on a Jalapeño Cheese Everything Bagel. Each bite was a burst of flavor—the soft, chewy texture of the bagel paired perfectly with the spicy kick of jalapeño and the creaminess of pepper jack cheese. It’s no wonder Western Bagel has become a staple in Southern California.
