Where can you find a killer sub or awesome sandwich in the North Valley? Today on Eat Live Love San Fernando Valley we’re at the Balboa Sub Shop in Northridge. Let’s go see what they’re all about.
The San Fernando Valley has a lot to offer. Amazing food, rich history, tons of community events and amazing people and organizations. I’m Scott Himelstein with the Scott Himelstein group and this is Eat Live Love San Fernando Valley.
Mike, It’s great to be here, man.
Hey, Scott. Thanks for coming by.
All right. So tell me a little bit about Balboa Sub Shop. How did you end up taking over this place in 2014?
So the shop has actually been open since 1977, long running kind of San Fernando Valley staple. I’ve actually been coming to the shop since I was about 13-14 years old, actually it was at a previous location. Moved to down here in 1998 with one of the former owners and wasn’t doing too well. And I just had kind of seen it, getting run down and wanted to, you know, kind of re-establish what it used to be and how important it was for the community and myself growing up as well.
All right. So the most popular thing on the menu, obviously that’s what you guys are known for, are your subs. So what are some of the most popular subs that you guys have?
So the standard most popular would be the Turkey, Bacon, Avocado, Swiss. But really one of the subs
that we’re very well known for is the special, which is basically Pastrami, Roast beef, Ground beef along with Bacon, Avocado and then all of our subs come with Mayo, Mustard, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Pickle, Oil and Vinegar and then our signature spicy sauce, which were, is also one of the very popular things we’re known for.
Is it real spicy?
You know, I’m a spicy person myself, so I love the spice, so not, it’s not very spicy for me but you know, I always try to tell people like that’s a subjective question. I don’t want you to, you know, don’t blame it on me to get too hot, but no, it’s not too spicy.
Well, it all sounds good to me. Let’s go see how you make everything.
All right. Let’s go check it out.
This is the special sandwich here at the Balboa Sub Shop. All right. So before I dive in, remember this has the Ground beef, the Roast beef, the Pastrami, Bacon, Provolone, and Avocado and their signature red sauce. So, let’s see if we can actually take a bite into this. And as Mike, the owner said, you need to use your snake jaws, that is the key to get this in your mouth. This sandwich is absolutely epic and you know it’s gonna be an incredible sandwich guys, when they give you a fork with it on the side.
The first thing that you notice when you take a bite into it, is the bread. So they locally source their bread from a local bakery here in the Valley. That’s number one. Number two, is right after that with all the sauces and everything they have on top of the meat, that actually gets absorbed into the meat itself. And so you end up with this incredible flavor in your mouth when you actually have everything combined once you’ve actually taken that bite. So again, this is just a great overall sandwich and a really cool spot here in the San Fernando Valley.
Again, one of the things I like about this place, it’s just a no-frills sandwich and sub shop. So if you’re looking for a really high quality sandwich and sub shop in the North Valley, make sure you come out and support these guys. Again they’re in Northridge, they’re on the Southeast corner of Balboa and Parthenia.
If you like this episode you already know what to do by now. Make sure you like, comment, share it, so we can make sure that everybody if possible here in the valley knows about these guys.
